A GUIDE TO BUYING ARGYLE PINK DIAMONDS - SYDNEY

Argyle Pink Diamonds are exquisite, not only because of their beautiful and unique range of delicate pink colours but because they attain the mystique of being one of the rarest gems in the world.

2018 Tender Argyle Pink Diamonds

Across almost 40 years, the Argyle Diamond Mine in East Kimberley, Western Australia, has produced a bounty of 865 million carats of rough diamonds becoming the source of around 90% of the entire globe’s pink diamonds.

However, since 2020 when the mine shut its gates permanently, the rarity and hence value of these precious pink diamonds has escalated and continues to do so.

Only a limited number of these precious raw gems remain in the world and there is no guarantee another pink diamond deposit will ever be discovered. As a result, the appeal of owning an Argyle Pink Diamond has soared beyond what we could imagine 10 or 20 years ago.

With just a handful of Argyle Pink Diamond retailers entrusted with Argyle Pink Diamond Select Atelier status, it is important to look for this accreditation when considering purchasing one. It is important to deal with someone you can trust to provide you with one of the few remaining pink diamonds in Australia. Pink diamonds sourced from the Argyle diamond mine and sold by Argyle Pink Diamonds are given an Argyle Certificate. The Argyle Certification contains a description of the unique characteristics of the Argyle diamond as well as the grading of the diamond detailing its weight, shape, colour, and clarity from Argyle.

Not only that, but only these retailers will have the expertise to guide you to find the right Argyle Pink Diamond jewellery for you.

As an Argyle Pink Diamond Select Atelier ourselves, we will carefully guide you through these precious gems and help you find the right piece to add to your jewellery collection.

What are Argyle Pink Diamonds?

Pink diamonds are exactly what you’d expect them to be: diamonds that are pink in colour, generally attributed to the additional pressure under which they were formed, some billions of years ago. They belong to the “fancy colour diamond” subcategory of diamonds.

Pink diamonds are graded according to their intensity and strength of colour. While all of them are indeed pink in colour,  their shades come in a variety of colours including purplish pink, pink rose, pink champagne, blue violet and red.

Pink diamonds have been found across the globe, including Brazil, Russia, Siberia, South Africa, Tanzania and Canada. However by far the most prominent mine  the Argyle mine in Kimberley, Western Australia. This particular mine accounts for 90% of the world’s bounty of pink diamonds. That said, even though the mine produced an annual output of 20 million carats, only 0.1% were classified as pink diamonds.

Why Should You Buy Argyle Pink Diamonds from a Specialist?

Because of the rarity and high value of Argyle diamonds, there's a good reason why any customer should take care when finding a reputable supplier.

The Argyle Pink Diamond trade can, because of their rarity of these gems, be open to occasional exploitation, so it is important you find a jeweller that has expert knowledge and accreditation on the subject.

It is also a good idea to know your budget, and what you should expect to reasonably invest in an Argyle Pink Diamond in today’s market. Generally speaking, the more intense deeper the pink colour, the rarer and more expensive the diamond. High-quality Argyle Pink Diamond prices can range from 10,000 USD per carat for a lower intensity pink to around 700,000 USD per carat for more intense pinks.

An Argyle Diamond price relates to the hue (the dominant colour of the diamond), tone (amount of light or darkness in the diamond) and saturation (the strength of the hue).

That said, evaluating the pink intensity is not straightforward. Each Fancy colour grade has its own range. They can be graded on a scale of 1-9, (the Argyle Colour Grading System) or from Faint to Red, according to the GIA grading system.

While carat weight and clarity are important, it’ is mainly the quality of colour, clarity  and cut that make a pink diamond so valuable. With Argyle Pink Diamonds, the brighter the better.  The fewer blemishes or ‘inclusions’ found in the gemstone the more pleasing it will be to eye and the stronger it’s sparkle

What to Look for in a Reputable Jeweller?

First, it is worth knowing exactly why you’re looking for an Argyle Pink Diamond. You may wish to buy a single gemstone as a personal or family investment, or turn it into a piece of custom jewellery.  Similarly you may wish to find an existing piece of Argyle Pink Diamond jewellery for a loved one or a special occasion . J Farren-Price can provide all of these options including sourcing and designing a beautiful piece of custom jewellery. Being clear on this will influence where you shop for your diamond.

Secondly, look for a jeweller who has clear credentials when it comes to pink diamonds. Check that your jeweller is an Argyle Pink Diamond Select Atelier - an accreditation an honour bestowed upon only a handful of Australia’s finest jewellers

Thirdly – and this essentially comes down to personal choice – look for a jeweller who sells jewellery you love. What you fall in love with, like all jewellery, is a matter of personal taste, what looks good against your skin tone, what works with your style and what you’re naturally drawn to feel that intangible connection with. Take your time to discuss your needs with a retailer and look through available options on their website, and, where possible, go in-store to browse pieces  “in the flesh”.
